Healthy soils need soil borne crop residues sufficiently rich in nitrogen to be humified into stable SOM. Lack of  said crop residue nitrogen will "stress" soil microflora. Respiratory quotients, qO2 (cf. Smith et al. 2021), are probably good indicators of such N-deficient crop residues incapable of building soil carbon. Again, "carbon farming" IS all about nitrogen.
