Toth et al. 2013 provide an index of the productivity of arable land across Europe. This iSQ index (sqicrop) is used to standardize N-fertilizer use efficencies when setting up the AgroNum database & algorithm. The map shows the said iSQ indicies overlayed with the AgroNum database. These geotiff files are avaiable via the European ESDAC.

Grain-nitrogen yields (kg-N_grain/ha) at 0-N_fertilizer (aN1) from long-term experiments across Europe and those predicted by Polyor's AgroNum algorithm are similar. These basal aN1 values mirror the soil's non-symbiotic fixation potential, azb, often overlooked. Increasing azb (aN1) in the presence of crop residues is a key element of Polyor's integrated fertilizer management (ifm) approach to sustainable agriculture.

Soil conservation through "carbon farming" may need to be revisited if sampling & monitoring costs are too steep. Bettigole et al. 2023 is a bit of an eye-opener. Simpler - for the user anyway, AI-based methods of ensuring soil organic matter conservation in intensive field-crop production may be warranted.

Sustainable agriculture is all about conserving soil organic matter. Soil-borne crop residues need to be sufficiently rich in nitrogen to be properly humified into stable soil organic matter.
